Prevent a Dog from Jumping Up
Ways to Prevent a Dog from Jumping Up
It is wonderful to have a puppy that is very excited and happy to see its owner. This excitement is always shown through jumping up to get the owner’s attention. Although it is hard to resist a cute little puppy giving you so much attention, you must not allow the puppy to greet you like that. While a puppy is easy to manage, a full grown dog may knock you off balance when it jumps up to greet you. This must be prevented while the dog is still a puppy before it becomes a habit, especially when there are children or elderly people around. A large dog can knock these individuals over and may hurt them, even when there is no intent to harm.

Tricks
One way to prevent dog from jumping up is to ignore the dog when it tries to jump up. The dog usually does this to get a person’s attention. The person should turn his back on the dog and avoid eye contact. This way, the dog is not getting the attention it wants. This technique must be enforced by all members of the household. Everybody should participate and use the same manner of preventing the dog from jumping up. When the dog is ignored consistently when it tries to jump up on you, the dog will learn that jumping up does not get the attention he wants and will likely turn to other means of getting attention.
You may teach the puppy other tricks such as “sit” or “stay” when it is starting to feel excited in greeting you. Provide food treats or praises when the puppy does not jump up to greet you or has obey your command. Or simply give the puppy a pat when it remains on the floor when you enter the room. These are positive reinforcements for the dog to learn that staying calm can get attention, while being excited and jumping up will be ignored. When it has calm down, you may cuddle and offer praises to show that staying calm will give him the attention it wants. The dog should be trained to obey these commands whether given by its owner or other people. The owner may also tell other people who comes into the house the command used to calm the dog. This way, the visitors will not get into awkward or embarrassing situations when the dog suddenly jumps up on them and they are caught off guard. When a dog is well trained, it can live harmoniously with all members of the household. Having a well behaved dog is an enjoyment and delight to the family.
