One simple product to stop dog digging is a garden hose. The owner should supervise the dog while it is in the yard. When the dog starts digging, the owner can spray water on the dog with the use of the garden hose to surprise it. This can be done every time the dog starts to dig. This will provide negative reinforcement to the dog and digging will no longer be enjoyable to the dog. It will stop digging in time.
Another simple product to stop dog digging is the use of chicken wire. These can be bought at any home improvement stores. The chicken wire can be hidden just beneath the soil in the areas that the dog often digs. When the dog begins to dig, it will be stopped by the wire and the dog will experience the uncomfortable feeling of having his paw scraping across the wire.
Balloons can also be use as a product to stop dog digging. Balloons can be buried in places where the dog often digs. This way, when the dog digs on the spot where the balloon is, it will pop and startle the dog. Or water can be put inside the balloons before it is buried, so that when the balloon pops, water will be splashed on the dog’s face. This will provide negative reinforcement to the dog but will not actually hurt it.
When the purpose of digging is to hide food or bones, the food given should be changed to something that is easily consumable so that there wouldn’t be any food left to bury in the yard.
When all of the above-mentioned method does not work, there is always a choice to provide a designated digging area in the yard. The only product needed is a border to be put around the digging area and some soft soil filled with treats. Once the dog learns that the spot is a delightful area for digging, it will automatically go to that spot every time it wants to dig.
