Puppy Training Biting

Training a Puppy to Stop Biting

Having a cute little puppy is a delight to any home, especially when there are children in the family.  It takes a lot of responsibility in bringing up a puppy.  The puppy may be cute and fun to play with, but it is important for the owner to know that proper training is vital if he wants to have a well behaved dog in the future.  The owner must realize that anything he does with the puppy will reinforce a behavior that it may bring with it until adulthood.  And thus, it is very important that the training starts from the day the puppy is brought home.  House rules and regulations must be set and strictly followed by the dog.  The owners must also be consistent in enforcing the rules of the house to the puppy.  The puppy must learn what behavior is appropriate when in front of people.  It must behave the same way it does to its owner and to other visitors of the house.

One common issue in dogs that must be stopped through training is biting.  Dogs, in general, like to explore its surroundings using its nose and mouth.  It likes to sniff and bite and chew on things it sees around the house.  Dogs uses its mouth in playing with people, and sometimes, it tends to nip and bite when the playing gets rough.  The dog does not know that it is hurting the human it is playing with.  Dog bites can be deadly especially when the puppy has not yet been given vaccine.  Accidents like this should be prevented through proper training.  The puppy should never be hit or slapped when it is being trained to stop biting because it sees this as part of play.  One way to train the puppy to stop biting is to refuse playing aggressive games, such as tug of war, chasing game or wrestling.  Although these games are fun to play with puppies, they encourage aggressive behaviors which are not acceptable for the dog to exhibit in front of human beings.  When a puppy is trained not to bite while playing, babies and young children will be safe to play with them.

One of the best ways to train a puppy not to bite is to let out a sharp “Ouch!” whenever the puppy tries to bite and then turn away from the dog.   This is also the same method used by dogs to each other when one dog is hurt by the other.  This method uses negative reinforcement to train the puppy that biting will not get the attention it wants.  When the puppy calms down and does not try to bite, give praises and attention to let the dog know it is appreciated that way.
