Training your New Saint Bernard Should Be Fun
The ideal age to start Saint Bernard training is during its puppyhood. Puppies are easier to train to do tasks or tricks such as potty training or fetching your slippers, since they are still starting to learn and explore the things around them. Make the training a fun experience for you and your dog. When it is not fun for you, it may not be fun for the puppy either. Think of different approaches to do the training. This is a time to get to know each other and bond. When the puppy is enjoying the training, it is more likely to follow and obey your commands.

A Note on Adults
When training an adult Saint Bernard that has not been exposed to any Saint Bernard training before, it will take them a little longer to learn to behave since it may already acquire bad habits. Saint Bernard training would be a little difficult to achieve at first. And an adult Saint Bernard will be harder to handle since it is a large dog. It may knock you down when it jump up on you. But through repetition and perseverance, it is possible to mold an adult Saint Bernard to be a well behaved dog that the family will love.
Positive Reinforcement
Use a lot of positive reinforcements in Saint Bernard training. Positive reinforcement is a technique used to achieve a given task by rewarding the dog whenever it does what is expected of it. It may be in the form of attention, praises, food treats or pampering. Most people use treats and lots of praises to show their dog they are pleased with its behavior. Some use both treats and sound reinforcements in the form of a clicker that clicks when a button is pressed. It allows the trainer to get the attention of the puppy when a certain task is being taught. When the puppy is used to the clicker sound, the trainer takes away the treats and instead uses only the clicker to get the behavior he wants.
Consistency
The key to Saint Bernard training, or any other kind of dog training, is consistency. Always be consistent in the way of doing a task and train your dog regularly. By doing the Saint Bernard training often, the puppy will not forget what is taught and will get used to doing the task. It is also important to set up house rules that needed to be strictly followed. There should be no way that an excuse is given to the dog during training. Rules must be strictly enforced by all means by all members of the household. After the training, your Saint Bernard puppy will be a well behaved and well trained dog that will grow to be a special part of the family.
