I See the Moon

Some dogs like to bark when they see the moon.  To stop dog barking at the moon, some owners just let their dog go inside the house so that the dog will not see the moon.  This will not solve the problem, but provide a negative attention to the dog instead and thus reinforces a wrong behavior.  Some owners even pacify the dog by giving out treats.  Again, this will not stop dog barking at the moon.

Some dogs need to learn to stop barking at the moon.  There are different methods that can be used to achieve this.  You may provide negative reinforcements that may not actually harm the dog every time the dog barks at the moon like a squirt gun or water hose.  You may use a squirt gun to squirt water on the dog or bathe the dog with water from the hose every time it starts to bark at the moon to surprise it.  This will provide a negative experience and the dog will think that barking at the moon will get it wet.  The owner can also make a startling noise to stop dog barking at the moon.  A tin can filled with pebbles or beans may provide this noise.  When the dog starts to bark at the moon, the owner should shake the tin can to startle the dog but without giving direct attention to the dog.  The owner may shake the tin can from afar.  This should be done consistently.  Barking will then be associated to unpleasant noise and this may stop dog barking at the moon.

While unpleasant sound may distract the dog from barking, yelling would not.  The noise should not come from the owner himself because it provides the attention the dog wanted.  Yelling at the dog will not stop dog barking at the moon; it will only escalate the bad behavior because the dog thinks that barking will bring its owner to yell, thus the attention it wants.  And continuous barking at night will annoy not only the owners but the neighborhood as well.  And when the owner does not do anything about this negative behavior, it often leads to neighborhood quarrels because of sleepless nights and unrest.  The owner must find a solution to this problem at once to prevent unpleasant situation with their neighbors.
