Reasons and Corrections
There are several reasons why a dog jumps up on people. It may be due to happiness when the dog jumps up to greet its owner or other people. The dog may be seeking attention because it is bored, or it can be asserting dominance over the individuals that enter the home. While it is fun to be greeted by an exuberant dog, it may put the person in an awkward position like having his outfit ruined or dirty by its paws, or be pushed over by the dog. When there are children or elderly people in the house, the jumping can become dangerous, possibly causing a fall that can hurt the individual.
The best way to stop dog from jumping up is to train it while it is still a puppy. The owner should be consistent with the training rule and jumping up should never be rewarded with attention. When the owner allows his pet to jump up on him and scolds it for jumping up on other people, he is confusing the dog for sending mixed messages. This will not stop dog from jumping up. The owner should not allow his pet to jump up on him at any time. The dog should not be given attention when it jumps. Consistency will make the dog learn that jumping up will never get the attention it seeks whether from its owner or other people that comes into the house.
When training the dog to stop jumping up, the owner’s body should be turned away from the dog and the dog should not receive any eye contact. It should entirely be ignored until it calms down before given eye contact and attention. Another way to stop dog from jumping up is to teach a different command or instruction like sit or stay. This is to distract the dog and helps to negate the behavior. It also helps to reinforce proper behavior by giving the dog attention it seeks through other means.
