Stop Dog Licking

Ways to Stop Dog Licking

Dog licking is considered by some dog owners as a way of their dog in giving them love and attention and they do not mind their dog licking them.  But for other people that do not like to be licked by a dog, it could be annoying to be greeted by a dog that loves to lick.  Dog licking is not a dangerous behavior, but it is still an improper behavior.  When you have guests at home that do not like dogs or are not animal lovers, and your dog starts licking them to get attention, your guests would feel uncomfortable.  This act of licking other people can cause embarrassment for the dog owner if the dog would not stop dog licking.  This habit should be addressed immediately.

Tips

One of the most important tip for dog owners to stop dog licking is to start the training as early as when the dog is still a puppy.  And they should be consistent with the “no licking rule”.  The owner should teach the dog to behave towards them the same way that they want the dog to behave towards other people.  If the owner allows the puppy to licks his face and scolds it when it starts to lick the face or hand of a visitor, the puppy will get confused with the rule being taught.  If you would not want your dog to lick other people, you should not allow it to lick you either.  Consistency is the key to any dog training.  And it is also the best tip to stop dog licking.

Another tip to stop dog licking is to train your dog by not giving it attention when it starts to lick you.  Although the dog may do this to show his excitement over you and you think it is wonderful to get this affection, you still should not tolerate this behavior to help your dog learn proper behavior when in front of other people.  You should turn your back and not give eye contact until your dog stop licking.  Once the dog has calm down, that is the time to give back the attention and praise the dog for not licking.  This method should be repeated until the dog learns to stop dog licking.  With constant practice and training, the dog will learn that licking will not get the attention it wanted and calming down will.  And this bad habit will be eliminated.

When you have trained your dog not to lick you, it would unlikely lick other people that come into your house.  But you should still give precaution to your visitors and tip them on how to refuse dog licking in case your dog has excitement fit and tried licking again.
